Trugs Word Search

Free printable phonics word searches

A4 or Letter, up to eight puzzles at a time, one or two to a page, with answer sheets. Every word decodable, every sheet different.

No watermark. No sheet limit. No account.

Worksheets that match what you are teaching

Most printable word searches are themed: farm animals, autumn, space. These are built on phonics instead, so the sheet you hand out practises precisely the pattern your group is on.

Choose Stage 3 and every word in the grid ends in a consonant cluster. Choose Stage 11 and every word has a soft c. Because all the words in a grid share a pattern, none of them stands out by shape, and a child has to read to find them. That is the difference between a time-filler and five minutes of decoding practice.

The words are drawn fresh from the stage bank each time you print, so two children can have different sheets of the same difficulty, and next week's set is not last week's set again.

How to print a set

  1. Pick a stage

Open the word search, choose Level 1, 2 or 3, then the stage you want. Each one targets a single phonic pattern.

  2. Open the print options

Choose Print, either from the stage list or from the tray while a puzzle is on screen if you want to print the one you are looking at.

  3. Set the paper and layout

Pick A4 or Letter, the grid size, how many puzzles to generate, and whether to place one or two on each page. The note under the options tells you what you will get before you commit.

  4. Add answer sheets if you want them

Switch answers on and a matching answer sheet follows the puzzles, with every word marked on the grid.

  5. Print, or save as PDF

Send it to a printer, or choose Save as PDF in the print dialogue to keep a set for later. Either way it paginates properly across as many pages as the set needs.

What you can change

SettingChoicesWhat it affects
Paper A4, Letter Page size and margins. Letter is slightly shorter, so the layout adjusts to keep two-up sheets from running over.
Grid Varies by stage How many letters across. Only sizes that genuinely fit that stage's words are offered, so a grid can never be too small for the words going into it.
Puzzles 1, 2, 4 or 8 How many different word searches to generate. Each is a fresh draw from the stage bank.
Per page One, Two Whether each puzzle gets a full page, or two share one. Two-up is the economical option for a class set.
Answers No, Yes Appends an answer sheet for each puzzle, with the words marked on the grid.

Eight puzzles, two to a page, with answers, gives eight sheets: four of puzzles and four of answers.

Using them in school

  • Print as many as you need. No watermark, no per-sheet limit, no licence to buy for the printed word searches.
  • Hand out different sheets. Generate eight at once and no two children need the same grid.
  • Keep a PDF set. Save a stage's worth once and reprint it whenever that group comes round again.
  • Mark it quickly. Answer sheets print in the same order as the puzzles.
  • No colour needed. Sheets are designed to read correctly in black and white.
  • Match your card packs. Stage numbers line up with the trugs boxes, so the worksheet matches the lesson.

Questions about printing

Are the printable word searches free?

Yes. There is no charge, no watermark and no limit on how many sheets you print for your class or your own children.

Can I save them as a PDF instead of printing?

Yes. Choose Save as PDF in your browser's print dialogue rather than a printer. The output paginates correctly across as many pages as the set needs.

Do the worksheets include answers?

Optionally. Turning answers on appends a matching answer sheet after the puzzles, with every word marked on the grid. Leave it off and you get puzzles only.

Will two children get the same worksheet?

Only by coincidence. The words and their placement are generated fresh each time, drawn from a stage bank of a hundred words or more, so printing a second set gives different puzzles at the same difficulty.

Can I print from a phone or tablet?

Yes. On iPad and iPhone the print sheet opens through AirPrint, and on Android through the standard print service. A laptop usually gives you more control over paper size.

Why are some grid sizes missing for some stages?

Because they would not work. Stage 14 is four-syllable words, and more than a third of them run to eleven letters or more, up to disappointment at fourteen. An eight-letter grid cannot hold them. Only sizes that genuinely fit a stage's words are offered, which is why a puzzle never ends up half empty.

Want the printed card games too?

The word searches are free. The trugs card games they follow, and the downloadable Trugs Printables under a schools licence, come from Read Successfully.
